The Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, 37 of 2002, (“the FAIS Act”), came into effect on 30 September 2004. The objective of the FAIS Act is to:
Protect consumers, and Professionalise the financial services industry.
The Act requires all financial advisors and intermediaries (providers) to meet certain competence requirements. At the time, the competence requirements consisted of experience and qualifications. To aid industry participants, the initial qualification requirements needed to obtain a licence to act as a provider were “reduced” from full qualification requirements to skills programmes (or credit requirements) to help those in the industry that did not have any formal qualification as well as those who had to start with studies as a result of the promulgation of the FAIS Act. The intent was always to gradually increase the qualification requirements to the requirement that providers should have full qualifications.
Consequently thereof, the Decision for Fit and also the Appropriate Needs for Financial Services Providers, 2003, had to be assessed. The FSB started an extremely intensive consultation procedure with the industry regarding the competency requirements. A “blank slate” approach was followed. Simply put, the existing Fit and Proper requirements were set aside completely and industry stakeholders were welcomed to provide input as to what requirements would be suitable, reasonable and “workable for them”. Input was likewise acquired regarding what would be a useful and efficient method to implement the requirements, and what those requirements should be? The consultation procedure with stakeholders begun in October 2006 and continued up until September 2008. The consultation was open to any provider, individual, industry associations, professional body etc. Participants were mostly product experts, professional bodies, industry associations, providers, representatives from larger corporate companies, and even training providers that specialise within the financial services industry.
Regulatory examination — It is accepted worldwide practice and standard to establish professional examinations for professions. The FAIS regulatory examinations are, therefore, not one-of-a-kind. The purpose of the regulatory exam is to establish a minimum standard in regards to the following:
Knowledge and understanding regarding the role and responsibilities of a key individual or a representative under the FAIS Act. Although the FAIS Act has been in operation since 2004, it was generally accepted that the level of understanding, awareness and understanding of the responsibilities enforced by the FAIS Act on providers was lacking. This led to non-compliance with the provisions of the FAIS Act for instance; providers did not provide clients with the needed information as required by the FAIS Act.
Providers are further under the misconception that ensuring compliance with the legislation is the responsibility of the compliance officer. This is not the case– the key individual is accountable|liable to ensure compliance with the FAIS Act and also representatives also have specific responsibilities in respect thereof. The compliance officer is responsible for the monitoring of compliance only.
It was agreed that a once-off regulatory examination should|ought to address the problems referred to above, and would ensure that all providers have a proper understanding of their specific regulatory roles. The examinations would be compulsory for everyone rendering financial services to clients. This was also viewed as part of the objective to professionalise stakeholders in the industry and to have confidence that providers know as well as understand the legislation that governs their industry.

Vertical blinds are simply vertical, and generally longer than horizontal blinds. They are often times used for doors, patios, and the like because they can be opened left to right instead of lifted, or else opened all the way.

Another option is woven wood blinds that are made by weaving different wood fibers with grasses or reeds for a natural appearance. These provide an entirely different look than the other blinds, so if you are interested in a natural look consider these types of blinds.
There are even custom made blinds available if you are interested in spending a little more money and having blinds that are made specifically for your home and window measurements. If not, other blinds are available in standard lengths that you can have cut if you need to.

If you are really on a budget then you can install the blinds yourself, because it is pretty easy if you have some patients and basic tools. If not, then you can have the blinds installed which does not cost an exorbitant amount of money and will be completed quicker and with less problems than if you do it yourself.

Window blinds have been in usage for long time now covering windows preventing entry of light. The historic evolution of blinds are not very clear, but there are theories that blinds were first designed and used in Venice if one were to go by the popular blind type.
People have been using window blinds for privacy also in addition to light preventing Sun light and eventually heat in summer. Although there are many types of window blinds, one which is a hit with every one is the Venetian blinds.
Varieties of Window Blinds
When we distinguish blinds according to their making, we can differentiate door and window blinds just by their respective sizes. The different kinds of blinds are as follows.
At the top are Venetian blinds because of their popularity. The slats of the blinds are made of plastic or metal. Wooden slats and bamboo slats are not unusual and they are known by their respective names only. For example wooden blinds and bamboo blinds. The usual width of slats is 50 mm but you can occasionally find someone using blinds of upto 120 mm width too. One window on a wide wall having 120 mm slats add to the aesthetics of the room. Venetian blinds have a couple of equally popular variants too.
1. Mini blinds; here the slats are pretty narrow and you can’t expect it to be wider than 19 mm.
2. Vertical blinds; slats are vertical here thus giving it the name. Additionally, you can find the slats made of stiffen fabric. It is possible to turn the slats by 90 degrees when they hang from their ends from a guide rail.
Slat type window blinds open by turning in place which is facilitated by turning rotator attachments connected to strings.
There are special types in window blinds, such as solid blinds referring to those which can be opened by pulling up or by pushing up only. These can’t be opened in place as they are made of one solid sheet material. Examples of these are here.
Holland Blinds: One most common Holland blind type is woven wood blind, woven by simple strings so that they can just roll up or fold up to open. These are preferred in tropical conditions because of their higher efficiency in Sun control. The natural appearance gives an exquisite feel and gels totally with the ambience.
Pleated Blinds: Stiffened fabric made blinds just pull-up to open and when pulled up they fit the recess at the top.
Honeycomb Blinds: You can call these as cellular shades also because of their two or more layered cellular construction. These provide better insulation thanks to their cellular design.
Faux Wood Blinds – Vinyl Blinds As An Alternative To Wood Blinds
Faux wood blinds are the most common form of blinds used as window coverings. This is because they are the perfect alternative to wood blinds and they are cheap. Fauxwood window blinds are made of vinyl material or a combination of vinyl and hardwood. They are called faux wood blinds because they look like wooden blinds. However, they are more durable than real wood and are suitable for all rooms of the home, even those with high levels of humidity. Faux wood blinds are also much easier to clean than wood blinds.
The main reason that faux wood blinds have become so popular is that homeowners like the look of blinds to their windows and the fauxwood blinds are cheap. Faux wood blinds can cost 30% less than wood blinds. They also last a lot longer than blinds made of real wood, which makes them really cost effective. An occasional cleaning and dusting will keep faux wood window blinds in perfect condition. In fact, these window blinds are so durable, you can take them down from the window and wash them in the bathtub.
You can get fauxwood blinds in sizes to fit the smallest or largest window. While you can purchase them in the store in sizes almost the same as that of your window, you can also have them custom made. Custom made faux wood blinds are not expensive either so you can dress your windows in the perfect manner without incurring extra costs. They are available in mini blinds or vertical blinds and you can also get these in motorized versions.
Installing faux wood blinds is a simple affair. You just have to decide where you are going to mount the brackets – inside or outside the facings on your window. Most of the faux wood window blinds come in measurements to fit snugly inside the facings, so if you want them outside you may have to look for cheap faux wood blinds that are an inch or so wider. Once you mount the brackets, then you simply slide in the head rail of the blind and insert the small covering that keeps it from falling out. Then you can attach the wand used to open and close the slats and you’re all set.
Whether or not you install the faux wood blinds inside or outside the facing, you can use valances and drapes with these blinds. If you purchase the fauxwood vertical blinds, then this comes with a covering for the head rail, so you don’t need to have a valance. Most homeowners do use a small valance or topper over both faux wood blinds and real wood blinds, just to suit the décor of the room and to add to its ambiance.
Every homeowner wants to make his or her property look as good as possible, both inside and out, and part of doing this is to select the right décor. Selecting the right window coverings is an integral part of getting the right look for home, and can make a big difference to the look and feel of any room. Inside Mount When you mount your new window blinds inside a frame, your accurate measurements mean your blinds won’t catch against the frame. To ensure accuracy, take measurements from the top, middle and bottom of your window frame and write down the smallest width to the nearest 1/8 inch. Then, measure the height in three places and record the longest of the three measurements, again rounded down 1/8 inch. You should also measure the depth that you will require. Don’t do deductions or any other measurement yourself; leave this to the manufacturers instead. Simply give them the measurements you have taken and they will provide your window blinds to the correct size. Outside Mount For outside mounted window blinds measure the exact width at the top of the frame and round down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Measure the exact height at the outside edge of your frame, and again round this figure down 1/8 inch.
Bamboo blinds are blinds made up of stems of bamboos. They come in a variety of sizes, colors or stains, patterns and folding styles. Bamboo blinds are very much effective in covering your window but letting a little light to pass through. This type of blind is very ideal if you want to have a brighter room without people pacing outside seeing you in the inside. Not to mention the great tropical feeling bamboo blinds can give.
Bamboo blinds are done by means of cutting bamboo stems vertically forming long sticks when mounted horizontally. After the bamboos are cut into sticks they connected together by a string. The folding patter of the bamboo blinds is very different from the usual modern Venetian blinds.
There are two major folding styles of bamboo blinds. One is the roll-up. Roll-up bamboo blinds are quite easy mechanism than the other style. Literally, a roll-up bamboo style is rolled upward to let light pass through. The second folding style is the Roman Folding Style. Roman folding style of the bamboo blinds was taken from other drapery blinds. Roman folding style in bamboo blinds has vertical folding orientation.
When buying bamboo blinds the size of your window is a big thing to consider. The bigger the size the more costly you are going to pay for the bamboo blinds. If in case you have a small window and you wish to make it look like a big one, you can do it by measuring the outside mount of the window. The outside mount of the window is the farthest limit of the window which includes the vertical window stills. If in case you have a big or wide window and you want it to look like a small one or else spend a little if you prefer using a bamboo blind, you can do it by measuring the inside mount of the window. The inside mount of the window does not include the vertical still of the window.
The inside and the outside mounts are the things you have to consider in measuring your window for a bamboo blind. When measuring your window for a bamboo blind use the standard measuring unit or if not know first the unit being used by the company you intend to buy bamboo blinds. Think about what you want your window to look like if you install a bamboo blind. Do you want it to look like a big window or the other way around?
Make sure that when measuring you only give a little allowance on the size so that you may not be charged with any extra cost due to extra lengths out of wrong measurement.
